Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
