British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of entry passages leading to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
