Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a military coup in September and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.
This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's determination was the potential of his transfer to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a announcement said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, the capital city, is located around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will experience a detention review on Sunday.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over the former president's case.
The plot was prevented because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The former president called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
